Boyes Helps Blues Down Maple Leafs In Shootout

POSTED: 4:28 pm EDT October 13, 2008

(Sports Network) - Brad Boyes scored the game-winner in the shootout as the St. Louis Blues downed the Toronto Maple Leafs, 5-4, at Air Canada Centre.

St. Louis' second shooter, Boyes went from the backhand to the forehand and slid the puck behind Vesa Toskala for the advantage. Manny Legace then made a glove save on Pavel Kubina's wrister for the win.

Paul Kariya and Patrik Berglund each had a goal and an assist while Boyes also lit the lamp in regulation for the Blues, who have won two of three to start the season. Andy McDonald had his third straight two-assist game while Legace made 35 saves in the win.

Niklas Hagman, Tomas Kaberle, Alexei Ponikarovsky and Nikolai Kulemin each had a goal for the Maple Leafs, who have dropped their last two games after opening the season with a win in Detroit. Toskala finished the contest with 22 saves.

"We played a great first period," said Toronto forward Jason Blake. "Second period, we just stepped on our foot and gave it away to them. We got outplayed and we didn't do in the second period what we did in the first."

The Maple Leafs controlled the first period from start to finish and held a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Toronto was skating on the power play and kept the puck in the St. Louis end for close to the full two minutes. Shortly after it expired, Mike Van Ryn received a pass in the high slot, faked a shot and dished it over to the left circle for Kaberle, who fired the puck home at the 3:22 mark.

Later in the frame, a giveaway at the St. Louis blueline was picked up by Nik Antropov, who got the puck down to Kulemin. With a defender on him, Kulemin fired a backhander on net that beat Legace with 5:54 left in the frame.

Another turnover led to the third Leafs goal. St. Louis tried to wrap the puck along the boards, but Antropov picked it up midway around the right boards and fired a pass to the front of the net where Ponikarovsky redirected it past Legace with 3:50 to play in the first.

St. Louis, though, dominated the second stanza and tied the game with three straight goals.

On a 3-on-1 rush, T.J. Oshie snapped a pass from the right circle to the left side for McDonald, whose initial shot was stopped by Toskala, but Boyes slammed it home on the follow-up just 33 seconds into the frame.

St. Louis was then awarded a five-minute power play at the 2:23 mark of the second as Ryan Hollweg -- who was making his first appearance of the season after serving a two-game suspension for receiving three boarding majors or checking from behind majors in a 41-game span -- slammed Alex Pietrangelo face-first into the boards. Hollweg was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for the infraction.

The Blues scored twice on the major to tie the game. The first goal came when Steve Wagner fired a shot from the point through traffic that was stopped, but Berglund eventually banged it in from in front. Just 48 seconds later, a tic- tac-toe play was finished when Keith Tkachuk one-timed the puck in from the low right side.

"It was a tough first period, we were just outplayed," said Tkachuk. "We came out in the second period and that major allowed us to get back into the game."

Toronto, though, regained the lead with six minutes left in the second. A right circle faceoff draw saw the puck squirt loose and Hagman grabbed it and, from the slot, fired a shot into the left corner of the net for a 4-3 advantage.

The Blues tied the game 4:21 into the third as the Maple Leafs blew a couple of chances to clear the puck out of their zone. Kariya eventually picked up the loose disc and backhanded it under the crossbar.

St. Louis had a power play opportunity late in the overtime, but Toskala helped force a shootout after making a nice stop on a Tkachuk redirection attempt down low.
