Eagles' Westbrook Out For Sunday's Game

POSTED: 1:34 am EDT October 11, 2008

(Sports Network) - Philadelphia Eagles running back Brian Westbrook will not play on Sunday at San Francisco.

Westbrook, who has been hampered by a sprained ankle he suffered in the Week 3 victory over Pittsburgh, fractured his ribs in last Sunday's 23-17 loss against Washington.

An MRI exam on Monday showed the injury, which occurred in the first quarter. Despite the injury, Westbrook finished the game with 33 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown and a team-best six catches for 51 yards.

In four games this season for the 2-3 Eagles, Westbrook has run for 194 yards and four touchdowns on 54 carries. He is also the team's second-leading receiver with 14 catches for 97 yards and two scores.

"Brian wants to go," head coach Andy Reid said. "But I have to do what I think is best for him and the football team. I think the bye week will help him. I think it will help take some of the sting out."

In addition to Westbrook, wide receiver Reggie Brown, who has caught 10 passes this season and has a groin injury, guard Shawn Andrews, who has missed the past three games with a back injury, and safety J.R. Reed, who has been bothered by a troublesome hamstring and ankle, are also out for Sunday's contest.

Wide receiver Kevin Curtis, who has yet to play this season after undergoing surgery in August for a sports hernia, could make his season debut against the 49ers. Curtis had 77 receptions for 1,110 yards and six touchdowns last season for the Eagles.

Philadelphia has a bye the following week and will return to the field on Sunday, October 26 at home against the Atlanta Falcons.
