Hailey Goranflo and her mother were heading out of the country for a life-saving medical treatment last weekend but had to return to Louisville to get a doctor's approval to fly.

Doctors have been monitoring Hailey's condition, and she was doing well and expected to be released from Kosair Children's Hospital Monday.

But Sunday night her condition worsened. She developed a fever and is congested. Her grandmother said she'll have to stay in the hospital at least one more day.

Hailey and her 3-year-old brother, Carter, suffer from Batten disease, an inherited disorder of the nervous system. Hailey and her mother, Miranda, were on their way to China for stem-cell injections, but only made it as far as Vancouver. Hailey became congested and the airlines wouldn't let her fly without a medical release.

She had to return to Louisville to get the release, which a doctor signed Monday.

"It really means a lot to us just for the medical release because this is Hailey's only hope," said Miranda Goranflo. "There is nothing in the U.S. for Hailey at all. If she stays here, she is going to die within a few months. We have to get her over there. This is our only hope."
